Ten Invaluable Christian Books

A great book is invaluable. There are a few in my collection that I return to over and over and can’t imagine being without. These books are worth more to me than great grandma’s antique china! Do you know what I’m saying? If I had to depart with all my worldly goods and could only keep one thing it would be a stack of my favorite books.

Monday night I was the guest speaker on Proverbs 31 MinistriesBible- study conference call with Melissa Taylor. We had a wonderful time! If you want to hear it, it was recorded- so you still have the opportunity. They are studying an amazing book; Let it Go, written by my dear friend Karen Ehman. At the end of the call I was asked what other books I’m reading. I think that’s a great question…

What you read really tells everything about who you are, what your desires are and what your future goals are. My response to the question; “Tortured for Christ- by Richard Wormbrand, Jesus Freaks- by D.C. Talk and The Cost of Discipleship by- Dietrich Bonhoeffer.”

In my present stack of favorite books;

The one and only infallible and inspired Word of God; the Bible is my favorite book. I love the fact that Corrie Ten Boom was able to smuggle a Bible into her concentration camp. She ministered the hope of eternity in the darkest place, and as a result- many chose Christ as their savior before their death.

The Spiritual Guide by Michael Molinos– written in 1675. There have been more copies of this book burned than perhaps any other single Christian book ever published. Michael Molinos was condemned to imprisonment in a dungeon for writing this book and he never came out. It is a phenomenal book about the deep things of Jesus; the cross and suffering. Oh my goodness, it is priceless to me.

The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer. This book draws you into a deep, abiding relationship with the One who “Nourishes the soul.” It’s a spiritual masterpiece exposing the roadblocks that keep us from fully knowing God. It reveals our responsibly in the pursuit, and ultimately leads us into the very presence of God Himself.

Desiring God by John Piper. Very insightful, must read!

Tortured for Christ by Richard Wormbrand. This is the story of courage, tenacious faith and unbelievable endurance. Wormbrand spent years in solitary confinement, physical torture, hunger and mental cruelty. His crime (like thousands of others) was his fervent belief in Jesus Christ and his public witness concerning his faith. Oh my goodness. . . I weep every time I read it- not because the stories are gruesome, but (oh my!) the love of Jesus will blow you up. Literally, I’ll be sitting down while I read it and find myself standing in ovation in tears to what true love for Christ looks like!

Jesus Freaks by D.C. Talk. I LOVE this book. It is a collection of short stories about men, women, and children who have suffered for their faith in Jesus. We used to read a story a night to our youngest in our devotion times together. Oh my, it puts our current problems in proper perspective. You must have this book in your collection.

The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer is on my lap right now. I haven’t read it all but the premise of it, deny self, pick up your cross and follow Him. Bonhoeffer is an amazingly brilliant man with unquenchable faith. He died for what he believed in.

George Muller: The Guardian of Bristol’s Orphans by Janet and Geoff Benge. Do you need your faith bolstered? Read this book! It’ll only take you a few hours to read and you’ll want to buy another one so you can give your copy away. It’s that good, I promise!

Hudson Taylor: Deep in the Heart of China by Janet and Geoff Benge. Incredible book. I loved it.

Fiction Books:

The Final Quest by Rick Joyner. A gripping story of the last battle between light and darkness. I read it at an airport waiting for my flight. I’m surprised I heard my flight called because I was so engrossed in it! It’s a great read!

The Prisoner in the Third Cell by Gene Edwards. It is a dramatic story of John the Baptist, imprisoned by Herod and awaiting death. He struggles to understand a Lord who doesn’t rescue him out of the prison. If you are a suffering Christian, or know one, this book will bring enormous comfort and insight into God’s ways. I love this easy read and it is thought provoking.

I want to give away a few of these books. Just leave a comment telling me which book you want to read (Tortured for Christ, Final Quest or Jesus Freaks) and I’ll enter your name in the drawing for that book. Don’t forget to check back to see if you won. I’ll pick a winner Friday at 10:00 AM! May the Lord increase your wisdom and understanding in the deeper things of Him! Each winner gets just one of the books. If you want a Bible I have one to give away, just let me know!

Proverbs 4:6-7 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding (NIV).

Love your collection. I too am passionate about my books, especially my Bibles. I have 10 Bibles, that does not count the 4 that I have on my Kindle. I love to read different versions of The Word. I love them all but my NIV Study Version has to be my most valuable for learning.

I am a book person, love walking into a book store and smelling the aroma of knowledge.

    • Wow you’ve got a lot of Bibles! The NIV Bible that I linked to is coming out in March–Published through Zondervan and Proverbs 31 Ministries did the side bar devotions! I’ve got a couple in there! I’m excited!

  15. Lisa Chandler says:

Sharon, I had forgotten about “Jesus Freaks” and would love a copy of that book. We love Voice of the Martyrs and some of the books listed are from them as I have seen on their website and publications I receive from them. One day our family will be on the mission field in West Africa, so we love sharing stories of those around the world that suffer for their faith in Jesus. Our kids love them, too. We have 3 children – 2 daughters (ages 9 and almost 7) and a 5 year old son. As Americans living with freedom to go to church, read our Bibles, pray in public places…I think we can forget and take for granted the luxury of living in a place that allows us to do so. Thanks for sharing your favorite books list as I will keep in mind some others you have mentioned that I have not gotten to yet (Bonhoffer). Bless you, Sharon 🙂

    • Hi Lisa! I’m so happy you mentioned Voice of the Martyrs. I haven’t looked at their recommended reading books. I’ll have to visit the site! Wow, West Africa!! May the Lord give you everything you need to get there and minister the hope of Jesus! May the Lord bless you and your family.

      • Lisa Chandler says:

Thank you, Sharon! I saw that I won “Jesus Freaks” and I never win anything and screamed out loud! And what a nice surprise in my day as sadly I am going to my cousin’s funeral later today (he would have been 19 on March 4th, but committed suicide earlier this week). Here is my email: Ljchandler72@googlemail.com and here is “our” blog – really my husband writes it and you will see it’s been awhile…: http://leaders4life-sierraleone.blogspot.com/ I appreciate your prayers as we are in a waiting on the Lord season and so much to say – all mentioned above really long stories I won’t bore you with! 😉 Peace and blessings to you – keep up the good work for God’s work! Bless you, Sharon 🙂

        • Oh no Lisa, that’s awful about your cousin!I’m so sorry. I will pray for your family today. Peace and blessings to YOU! Love, Sharon

  16. Ashley says:

I would love to read “Tortured for Christ”. My One Word for 2013 is “Faith” and last year it was “Love”. To hear how much other’s love God and suffer for their faith will encourage me to do the same! Thank you and God bless you, Sharon!

  17. Hilda Quintanilla says:

    • Thank you Cindy! I don’t know that D.C. Talk has any other book other than this one. It has been a huge hit for a while. Blessings!

  20. Jennie says:

I am checking into all these books, The one I be blessed to win would be Jesus Freaks, something about the title and sharing it with my family is drawing me to it!

  21. Sharon, it sounds like you have an amazing collection of books. I would love the opportunity to read Jesus Freaks by D.C. Talk. I have the book titled, “Tortured for Christ” and can adhere to the fact that it is a must read. After listening to you at the weekly conference call on Monday, I see I need to add you to my collection of weekly blogs to read each week. Have a blessed day and God Bless You! 🙂

  22. Stephanie Townzen says:

I love to read, and I have made my list for the bookstore based on your recomendations. Thanks a million. I have the other two so put me in for “The Final Quest”

    • You’re welcome Stephanie! You name is in the drawing for “The Final Quest.” Wow you’ve already your your list in at the bookstore! I’m impressed! Blessings!

  23. Laurie says:

I would love to The Final Quest. This is an amazing list. I am reading Undaunted by Christine Caine right now.

  24. Well my friend….I want to race out and purchase all the ones listed that I haven’t read! And…how on earth to choose which title from those 3 you suggested?? Your enthusiasm over all of them stirs my heart to long to read each one. I think I’ll leave it like this, should I be blessed enough that the Lord would cause you to draw my name, I would also let Him choose (via you) which book He thinks would be His choice for me. I love that I fully trust that if He thinks I need one right now, I rest in the knowledge it will come my way. 🙂

I love you my friend…and thanks for your precious message yesterday. You always bless and encourage my heart. God gave specific direction to me again today in His Word and though difficult, I am following. May He keep me strong.
    Hugs and prayers,
    Joy

    • Hi Joy! Have you read any of the three yet? I love you and have prayed for you today! Love and hugs, Sharon

      • THANK YOU for your prayers….that is worth far more than any book. Nothing blesses or humbles me more than to know that someone has taken time to pray for me.

No, I hate to admit I haven’t read any of those three. I have a ceiling to floor, wall to wall library packed with books, books in boxes, boxes in bins, 99% non fiction (I don’t tend to purchase fiction, I can borrow those from the church library). A book is a “friend” to me and I underline, write in the margins, and read them over again. After working 12 years in a library, and working for a Christian Bookstore, nothing is a sweeter treat to me than a book.

You’ve made me think about this: http://ponderinginhispresence.blogspot.ca/2009/11/never-ending-story.html I wrote it over 3 years ago. My life is a book. Words wait to be written. An award winning novel, a best seller, a captivating love story between a Princess and her King. Our lives are the most beautiful stories being written. I surrender to His plot. Trust His conclusion. I’m guaranteed it will be happily every after!

        • Joy, I just read your blog post, I LOVED it!! You’re an amazing writer! That was beautiful and perfect use of scripture! Thank you for sharing that. Love and hugs, sharon

          • Thanks for reading…and for your encouragement. HAHAHA…I loved your second comment too *smile*, but you’re never “anonymous”…especially to God….He knows you by name. 🙂
            Hugs

  25. Pat McGlinchey says:
