A Life of Faith- George Muller

What do you need more faith for today? Enter your answer in the comment section for a chance to win these two books!

There is no greater life than a life lived by faith.

It is so powerful that even with a tiny amount of it, nothing is impossible to us (Matthew 17:20). Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). Without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

A couple of months ago I gave you a list of 10 Invaluable Christian Books. In that list I included a book about George Muller. If you want to read about someone who lived his entire life by faith, read this book. When Muller first became a Christian he felt that God was leading him to be a missionary. He was Biblically trained in the best school, had the desire to preach and the ability to speak many languages. He was completely ready for the adventure.

But God detoured Muller and led him to open orphanages in Bristol, England.  From his latter 20’s to age 70 he took care of over 10,000 children with God’s help alone. Not once in all those years did he ask for financial help from anyone other than God Himself. There were days he didn’t have food to serve the kids, but he never doubted that God would provide.

And God did provide for them.  Miracle after miracle happened at the orphanage. Unexpected food would arrive at the door just in time for meals. People came by to give a gift, and many times it was the exact amount needed to pay a bill.  These things happened not because Muller told anyone his need, but because of God alone.

Rarely did they have money for the next week, but they lived on faith.  And not once in all those years did they go without food or shelter.  George Muller trusted God with a depth rarely seen.  His faith and generosity set a standard for Christians of all generations.

People from all over the world soon heard about the miraculous things happening because of the faith of Muller.  D.L. Moody was one of them.  He visited the orphanage when 1500 kids lived there and was inspired by the power of Muller’s faith and God’s ability to provide even though Muller never asked for money.

When Muller was 70 years old God released him to do his lifelong dream—to go into all the world and preach the gospel.  For 17 years he spoke and traveled non-stop. He spoke on living a life of faith. He preached for Charles Spurgeon and inspired Hudson Taylor.  He spoke to over 3 million people and traveled to 42 countries, speaking at least once a day until he reached 87 years old.

He died at the age of 92. Tens of thousands of people showed up for his funeral. In his lifetime he read the Bible cover to cover almost 200 times (now that’s the secret to faith—know the promises and believe them). He never took a salary in 68 years of ministry but always trusted God to provide for him. He never took out a loan or went into debt for himself, the orphanage or his ministry abroad.

There is no greater life than a life lived by faith.

Faith is so powerful that even with a tiny amount of it, nothing is impossible to us.

God, increase our faith! May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven! In Jesus’ name, amen.

empty nester; sons in different states; God has built up my marriage/taught me how to parent sons in God’s truth; God’s ways….today i need His word (again) to reminde me that He is in control and loves them more. My head knows this clearly/my heart aches a bit.
    thank you.

  5. To release fear & hurt….God says he provides for the flowers of the field and the birds of the air – I have only a limited knowledge of what His plan is for me, I have to not be afraid to face the future (retirement) alone, worry about money or health. I have to release past hurtful relationships in order to see the doors & people God is putting in front of me….I can’t see His path for me, until I let go of the “shadows” in my life. I need more faith to release fear & hurt…….

    • Oh Barb he truly will provide for you just as you quoted yourself– He will do more for you than you can imagine!
Hide Psalm 91 in your heart; He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, …

He will be your provider. Trust Him and ask Him what else you need to be doing to prepare for the days ahead. He will answer.

      Love and hugs,
      Sharon

  10. Jeanie Kelley says:

Faith and trust that my husband will find a job that is full time and with all the benefits. That would be a huge faith for me now. I am learning to use my “faith muscle” in times like this because when it happened, I did not know how to use this faith muscle except to learn how to rely on God and his word and having ones come around me and praying for me. That is my faith issue today and every day. Also faith in finances as well for us as a family. To rely on God all the time and never question him and his goodness.

    • Lord, Increase Jeanie’s ability to know that You are to be trusted! Increase her faith even now! In Jesus’ name, AMEN
Psalm 20 says that He will answer you in your day of trouble and he will grant to you according to your heart’s desire.

      Love and hugs,
      Sharon

  12. Faith to let God heal some old wounds that are still controlling my emotions to some extent.

    • My dear Becky- Satan likes nothing more than to continually bring up old wounds. Every time he tempts you to think despairing thoughts tell him to leave in Jesus’ Name! You are more than a conqueror in Jesus Christ but Satan wants you to think opposite.
2 Corinthians 10:5 …we take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ …
Philippians 4:8 …if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, let your mind dwell on these things. . .
Lord, increase Becky’s faith to know who she is in You. Help her to triumph over her past and run this race with strength and zeal! Thank You Lord! In Jesus’ name, AMEN

    • Lord God I ask that you heal Evelyn’s heart from the past wounds that she has experienced. Would you come right now and speak to her deepest hurt. Lord you endured abuse and You know the pain and agony of it. Help her right now to trust You and to give You all of her heart, not withholding anything anymore! Increase her ability to trust You for You are to be trusted! In Jesus’ name, amen

      Love and hugs,
      sharon

  15. NEEDED : Faith to share needs! – George exemplified personal faith, no doubt. And I’m challenged by your blog right when I’m typing up a newsletter expressing the needs of our Mission! – Faith calls for us to restrain, and other times to reach. … “a time to gather stones together.” For some of us a display of personal faith may be asking others to partner in the work and thus share the blessing. The work of Mercy Partners has been rooted in what I call “Reach faith” rather then restraint . ( otherwise it might be called: Tom Kilian Ministries Inc.) For this brother, raised very independently, sharing needs don’t come easy, in fact, it is the way I express devotion to God and is the testing of my faith. Our mission work is directed at providing an opportunity for Christians to invest in evangelistic opportunites as much as it is to empower native evangelist to carry the Good News to conflict zones. By sharing the needs of others we acknowledge that God uses other people to serve as an extension of His Body. there are Tons of faith challenges when we go public with our needs and the needs of others – we become vulnerable to public opinion, corporate discouragement, and held to strict accountability. The fruits are: greater blessings, larger harvest and wider impact! so, If we are challenged by the life of George, let us fully depend on God, and if that means asking others to partner with us, we better do so. – I pray that you have been blessed by your partnership with Mercy Partners – keep up the thought provoking Blogs!

    • Lord God You alone know Tom’s needs and the needs of Mercy Partners. We ask that You provide for the mission in miraculous ways, in ways that we could never have imagined. Thank You for the work You have already done and are about to do. Strengthen Tom and make straight paths for his journey- renew his energy in Jesus’ name, amen!

      Love and hugs, sharon

  16. Tina Ray says:

  21. I need faith to trust that God is in control and not me. I need to learn how to surrender the control (that I don’t have!) to Him and trust Him. I spend most of my childhood in a life out of control but trying to appear that it was in control and now I’m trying to give my adult years to a God who is in control which makes me feel out of control. But, that is the only way we can please God and that is what I want more than anything. Lord, help my unbelief.

    Blessings to you.

    • I love this verse Donna; Oh taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Oh fear the Lord oh you saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing!. . . The righteous cry out and the Lord hears them, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Ps 34:8-10, 17,18.

Lord, increase Donna’s trust in You! She is asking Lord, You tell us you will fulfill! thank You! in Jesus’ name, amen

      Love and hugs,
      Sharon

  22. faith to begin my relationship with the Lord. I was brought up on a “catholic” home, but never really understood the meaning of being a christian. I’m trying to pursui the life God intended for me.

    • My dear Pri,

When did you become a Christian? Do you have a good church family to attend church with every week? Oh how I wish you lived near by– wouldn’t it be wonderful to worship together at the same church?!

Lord, open the scriptures to Pri make them come to life as never before. Teach, guide and minister Your power and increase faith today. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

I need more faith to know that where God is leading us to live, that we will be able manage it….a choice at 50 years of age to have a larger mortgage but a beautiful small house and beautiful peaceful land or less of a mortgage, very small house, more sacrifice, usable land for our needs and the ability to get out of debt and start saving????? My husband is new at this “faith” thing and it is so difficult to encourage him to move on it. Father, my ears are open to hear you, my heart is open to your love and my eyes are open see your great works. Where you will lead, I will follow!

    • Retta, I love your prayer. God is answering it this very moment. His heart is near those who are postured before Him in adoration and expectation! Lord increase even now Retta’s faith that she may be confident at where you lead them. Give her assurance and peace in You. In Jesus’ name, amen

I need more faith that my GOD will provide for my family financially. My husband and I both work full & part time jobs but there never seems to be any money left. There’s got to be drastic action taken on our budgeting. I have always been a believer but until recently have I really dived into changing my whole living. We recently took the 30 day challenge from K-LOVE and now that’s all we listen to.
How ironic but just this past Wednesday night at church one of the pastor’s was talking about George Muller and his passion of faith and how he ministered to so many around the world. “HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD!”

    • That’s so cool Cindy!
Wow you both work a full time and part time job! That’s hard.

Lord give Cindy and her husband wisdom about their finances. Give them peace and confidence about their future. Increase Cindy’s faith right now and bless her and her husband. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  33. Stephanie Corley says:

How timely this posty is! I love how God is ALWAYS on time! My best friend’s birthday is April 29th & I am preparing a gift of “Faith” for her. Faith for her to keep believing that God has the perfect mate for her, & faith for me to keep believing that God is going to bring my husband & I a child. She is a huge support to me in my faith walk & I hope to encourage her with this gift as much as she has encouraged me in my waiting. I bought her a study titled “Lady in Waiting: Becoming God’s Best While Waiting for Mr. Right”. I bought myself a study called “Preparing My Heart for Motherhood”. I thought it would be wonderful for each of us to do these studies as an act of faith that God will bring these desires to fruition. I’m also giving her a box filled with Bible verses on faith. The book on George Muller would be a great addition & something that we could read together & discuss to encourage us on our faith journey.

Thank you, Sharon, for always being an encouraging voice & example of faith in action!

    • God we ask for 2 miracles right now; a husband for Stephanie’s friend and a baby for Stephanie and her husband! Lord we commit this to You and believe You will accomplish both! Increase Stephanie’s faith in You right now! Help her to believe that nothing is impossible to You! Thank You Jesus! in Jesus’ name, amen

      Love, sharon

  34. Kathy says:

The one thing I need for faith is to believe that the Lord will touch my husband’s life and bring him to salvation. I’ve been married 15 years and in that time, I have prayed for his eyes ears and heart to be open to the Word of God. Since he comes from a Jewish background, he is resistant to Christ and feels he does not need the a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I have the peace that the Lord will win him but I need to stop looking at the time line and believe my husband will come to know Christ in God’s time.

    • Lord call Kathy’s husband to You! Speak to Him in his dreams, in his waking hours, through people he meets out and about and through Kathy. Draw him to You quickly Lord! Increase Kathy’s faith as she waits for this answer! in Jesus’ name, amen

      Love and hugs,
      Sharon

  35. Ronnie says:

I want to live my life of faith and it has been a constant bombardment of disappointments. I want faith for my husband’s healing so he will go to work. He has not worked in 2 years and I am the only income and it is not enough. Just received a letter that states we won’t get our refund because of back tax, and the fines and interest are crazy. I’m just surviving.

  36. I am living on faith right now since July 2012 because I have been looking for a full-time job since that time. The job market these days is very hard and unpredictable. I have been on interviews but not getting any offers like I used to without any problems. I am lucky and blessed to still have my part-time independent contracting position. I would be having a difficult time if I was not living with my relative. I miss working because I love the interaction with others and working hard at my job. I pray God will answer my prayers soon if it is in His will. He knows how much I love to work and count on that paycheck for a living. With God, I always manage to find a way since I am relying on my faith to see me through this problem and any other one that I face in life.

  37. I need God to give me extra faith in doing some forgiveness. I really need and want to WANT to forgive several people who
did some terrible injustices to me as a young child….one person is living and one has passed away. I feel like I have been able to forgive
the deceased person, but the one who is still alive is another story. Because of her behavior to me as a child i have led a life of very painful
memories and scars. Those behaviors of abuse (physical, mental and emotional) have caused me much stress and I
have had, and continue to have problems in those areas to this day. I want to truly be able to forgive her and be able to heal
and really concentrate on loving others and possibly finding a way to help others who have also been hurt and abused by a
    step parent.
BTW….i am in my late 50’s….so, this has been hurting for a LONG time.
Thank you for your help and prayers!

  38. I need the “unction” to live the life of a committed disciple of Christ! I have been walking with the Lord for 35 years but I still need improvement.

  39. Mary Beth says:

Faith for salvation for dear family members.

  40. Dorothy says:

    finances

  41. Mary Lou says:

Faith to do God’s will in major decision within our church as well as faith to live out what I believe on a day to day basis (in our finances, in raising our children, in relating to my husband and others).

  42. Lord, I need faith to stregnthen me as I help my children raise their babies. Thank you that my chilren are good parents and believing Christians.

  43. As I am in the hospital as I found this Blog and it wasn’t an accident, God’s timing is perfect. I am asking God for healing of blood clot in my leg. I was very sad and discouraged yesterday but I know God will be with through this journey.

  44. LAGAIL says:

I need Faith & Salvation for me,my husband Wesley, my children, spiritually, physically and financially, debts release. I am trusting God for a positive report from the doctors on a test am to take. Also trusting him for my husband’s healing. There are times my faith us so up there, then the devil tries to bring in some doubts,my prayer is God fills me with his spirit to fully trust in him
